The George Floyd Global Memorial

I recently paid a visit to the George Floyd Global Memorial alongside my nephew, who had come all the way from New York. See my nephew’s Tiktok video here. Describing the impact of the memorial is a challenging task. It is situated at a street corner where a Black man was subjected to a brutal murder, and that presence is unmistakable. The atmosphere still carries the weight of that tragedy, leaving a lingering heaviness in the air. However, amidst this, there is also an undeniable energy of an empowered community determined to rise above this ordeal and raise their voices against the long-standing violence that has plagued our nation.

Due to the inspiration drawn from Prince's legacy and the location of Needlecraft Emporium in Minneapolis, I have chosen the George Floyd Global Memorial as the inaugural charity for Show UR Love Sign. Furthermore, having had the privilege of working with Prince in the 1990s, I personally experienced the profound impact of his spirit of love and generosity. Additionally, the senseless tragedy of George Floyd's murder occurred in the northside of Minneapolis, the same neighborhood where Prince grew up and felt a strong sense of familiarity. It is important to me to select an organization that echoes Prince's unwavering stance against racial injustice, as he unapologetically embraced his identity as a Black man, a fact that some of his fan base seems to be overlooking (as seen in comments here and here).

On 09/02/2023 the Show UR Love Sign initiative donated $100 to the Geoge Floyd Global Fund. Thank you!
